  • Weekly Round up – 25th August 2024

Over the past 10 days Steph Attenborough and Joanne Sharman continued to add to their half marathon tally by taking part in the Ten events in Ten days challenge. Something which they both now hold double records for. The Ten events in Ten days challenge was held over two courses and ranged in distances from 5k up to 40 miles. Steph and Jo’s chosen distance was the half marathon, running one each day for 10 days. The two courses that Steph and Joanne ran consisted of one being a 3.6 mile loop over hills, light trail, grassland and cycle route (days 1,5,6,7 & 8) and the second course being 5.25 miles loop with more hills (days 2,3,4,9 & 10). The elevation ranged between 600 & 900 feet depending on which course they were running. Their race times for each day consisted of day 1 03:23:25, day 2 02:53;19, day 3 03:11:53, day 4 03:39:46, day 5 02:56:18, day 6 02:49:13, day 7 02:51:54, day 8 03:05:00, day 9 03:37:30 and day 10 02:35:49. Totalling an impressive 31 hours (approx.) of running. The Peel Running Club is affiliated with England Athletics.  This affiliation allows the club to access a range of support, programmes and training which means our members can access a range of benefits and services to help, manage and engage members.  As a club we are required to meet a set of standards which ensures the club has the right policies and procedures in place.  Having achieved this we have been shortlisted for Regional Club of the Year award (West Midlands).  We are down to the final three which is an achievement in itself.

As part of our application, several members reflected on the first time they ran with the club and the impact running has had on them.  There were so many interesting stories!

“I was very brave and ran out with Peel Road Runners tonight.  Everyone was very friendly”. Val.

“My first run was with Mary and Sandra.  They talked all the way round, I was gasping.  They would turn round and ask if I was alright.  Just about replied”. Pete

“From nothing to marathons, to racing a train, to nights on a mountain under the stars, solo 24 hr runs, cross-country, partying with the best.  The Peeler family has given me twenty-seven years of pure joy.  When I had my heart attack there were Peelers there to save my life. If you wonder why I turn up to walk with friends it’s because of the above”.  Chris

“I had not long turned sixty and was looking for an activity to get my fitness back.  My daughter suggested Couch to 5k so I turned up at the Snowdome for week one feeling really out of place.  Sandra chatted to me and took me over to the rest of the group”.   Ann

“My main first memory of the Peelers was attending the first AGM at the Samuel Barlow – with chip butties.  That was when I knew this club was for me”.  Martin

The Peelers met every Tuesday evening – skate park car-park in the Castle Grounds @6:45pm for a 7:00pm start.  There are a choice of groups to suit different paces with run-backs.  No Peeler is ever left behind.

We start this week’s round up with some very exciting news, Peel Road Runners have been shortlisted by England Athletics for a Regional Club of the Year Award. The Club has gone from strength to strength over the years, working hard to ensure compliance with Club Standards, creating a welcoming environment for new members and supporting the local community in numerous ways; Park Run volunteering, supporting the Tamworth Rotary Santa Sleigh, continuing to host the Gate Gallop in support of St Giles and fundraising for a defibrillator which is now located at The Wigginton Pub, to name a few. To be nominated is a tremendous accolade and testament to our wonderful members (past and present), volunteers and committee members all of whom invest time and energy to make it the successful club it is.
