Month: February 2019

  • Weekly Round Up – 18th February 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Saturday dawned sunny and warm at Kingsbury Water Park, a perfect early spring day and the club was well represented at Parkrun, amongst a total field of over 500 eager runners.

This weekend was a Valentine’s special event with pacer runners available for anyone wanting to set a new personal best with Peel’s own Rob Mace getting involved as the pacer for the fastest 20 minute target.

Not surprisingly pacer Rob was the first Peeler home in 9th place overall in a quick 19.51 mins. Next came Mark Boffey in 22.48 mins followed by Garth Cox (23.27), Darren Truman (24.00), Darren O’Leary (24.07), Stuart Hatton (24.32) and Marcus Fairburn (25.50) and Ashley Goodman (26.47). Jackie Tierney was the fastest lady Peeler in 27.40 mins, finishing ahead of Mick Cooper, who set a new personal best of 27.59 mins and Ann Hill, who also set a new personal best of 30.39 mins. Caroline Evans finished in 32.51 mins ahead of Sarah French (32.56), Alison Dolphin (37.22) and Christine Norris 37.23 mins. Congratulations also go to Sally Hatton for setting a new personal best of 29.49 mins. Sally isn’t a Peeler but she has the good fortune to be married to one!

On tour were Allan Williams who finished the Markeaton event in 26.00 mins and Andrew Pickard who completed the new Storthes Hall event in Huddersfield in 26.15 mins.

On Sunday Mike Shelton completed the Leicestershire Half Marathon in a strong 1:35.58 hours and Sophie Galloway completed the notoriously hilly Rugeley 10 mile race in 1:36:49 hours. Well done to both.

Peel Road Runners meet at the Snowdome at 7pm every Tuesday and Thursday. New members are always welcome, please see our Facebook page for further details.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • Weekly Round Up – 11th February 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There was a good club turnout at Kingsbury Water Park on Saturday morning for parkrun with the windy conditions adding to the challenge.

Rob Mace once again led the club home in eighth overall in 19.31 mins, ahead of Mike Shelton who was 20th overall in 21.20 mins and Andrew Pickard in 22.15 mins. Next was Dave Fern (24.13) who pipped Mark Boffey and Simon Gordon to the line (both 24.14). Ashley Goodman was next in 24.59 mins, then Judith Matthews was the fastest lady Peeler in 25.09 mins, followed by Phil Neale (25.22), Darren Truman (25.27), Stuart Hatton (25.44), Allan Williams (26.00), Sandra Ingram (27.05) and Sarah French (32.18).

On Sunday the club took part in the fourth round of the Derby Runner Cross Country league. The venue was Anslow, near Burton on Trent and was the same 5.5 mile course used for round 2 in November. However the course was wetter and muddier than last time and the water in the stream that was crossed three times even colder, but at least the heavy rain stopped just before the race.

There was a good club turn out and some strong performances. For the men Rob Mace was 7th overall, just beating Martin Hollamby in 8th. Lee Rickards was 31st, Mike Shelton 38th, Darren Truman 70th, Matthew Shaw 71st, Richard Finnegan 72nd, Ashley Goodman 77th, Craig Strong 81st, Mark Boffey 86th, Simon Gordon 88th, Garth Cox 90th and George Hope 96th.

In the ladies event Rachel Rickards a strong 10th, Judith Matthews 15th, Rachel Casey 21st, Sandra Ingram 33rd, Sophie Galloway 35th, Jackie Tierney 44th and Caroline Evans 52nd.

Last Thursday the club hosted its first #Run and Talk event organised by England Athletics in conjunction with MIND.  The session was well received and it is our intention to repeat the event.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”1030″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”1029″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • Weekly Round Up – 3rd February 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Saturday morning dawned cool and crisp with many Peelers having their eyes on the Kingsbury Water parkrun. Just running 5k wasn’t enough for some and so ten hardy Peelers met in Fazeley to run to Kingsbury, run parkrun and then run home, a total distance of 12 to 13 miles. The warm up on such a cold day clearly didn’t do any harm with several strong performances in evidence.

First home for the club was Rob Mace in sixth place overall in a very fast 18.54 minutes. Although he has been round in under 16 minutes before, this was his fastest ever solo run without the assistance of a large dog! Next was Matthew Shaw recording his seccond personal best in as many weeks, this time finishing 19th overall in 21.16 mins. He was paced round the course by Mike Shelton who finished in 20th in 21.18 mins. Mick Webster had clearly also had his weetabix finishing 28th overall in 21.47 mins.

Phil Neale was next home in a respectable 22.43 mins, followed by Darren Truman (23.00), Darren O’Leary (24.36), Mark Boffey (25.38), Stuart Hatton (25.44), Ashley Goodman on his return from injury in 25.47 mins and Marcus Fairburn in 26.13 mins.

First Peel lady home was Stella Martin in 27.42 mins followed by Sandra Ingram and Jackie Tierney both in 27.47 mins. Mick Cooper finished in 28.34 mins followed by Tim Mudd (28.40), Sophie Galloway (28.59), Dave Fern (29.36), Darren Cotton (31.14), Carolyne Brown (32.05), Caroline Evans (32.24), Wendy Bowyer (34.14), Lawrence Williamson (36.10), Christine Norris (36.28) and Alison Dolphin (37.17).

Peelers on tour were Allan William who completed the Rosliston parkrun in 31.24 mins and Andrew Pickard who finished the Sheffield Hillsborough event in 24.46 mins.

A reminder that this Thursday 7th February the club is hosting one of the #Run and Talk events organised by England Athletics in conjunction with MIND. The session is open to anyone and the aim is to get people running and talking to improve mental well being. The event meets at the Snowdome at 7.00pm to set off for either a shorter (approximately 5k) or a longer (10-12k) run at 7.15 with a coffee afterwards from 8.15.[/vc_column_text][vc_row_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”1026″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][vc_column_inner width=”1/2″][vc_single_image image=”1025″ img_size=”full”][/vc_column_inner][/vc_row_inner][/vc_column][/vc_row]

This was arranged through a UK Athletics scheme to support and encourage running at a grass-roots club level. The session was well supported and positively received by club members, even if some of the warm up exercises attracted the amusement of the assembled spectators! Further sessions are scheduled for February and March.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • Weekly Round Up – 21st January 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There was a respectable turnout at Kingsbury water park for Parkrun on Saturday although the distractions of the National Running Show at the NEC were too much for some.

First home for the club was Darren O’Leary in 22.34 mins, followed by Dave Fern (23.44) and Stuart Hatton (25.40) who managed to hold off Marcus Fairburn (25.42). Sunday brought the third round of the Derby Runner Cross Country League, the venue this time being Allestree Park in Derby. This proved to be a very muddy and hilly six mile course, possibly the most difficult course seen so far. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After a fairly relaxed Christmas and New Year period, with this time of year offering a break from racing, Peelers were out in force at Kingsbury water park for Parkrun on Saturday.

First home for the club was Michael Shelton in 115th place overall in 20.25 mins. Not too far behind was Malcolm Bembridge in 21.18 mins, he was followed by Darren O’Leary (23.05), Garth Cox (23.36), Dave Fern (24.05) and George Hope in 25.16 mins and Marcus Fairburn (25.50) narrowly held off Stuart Hatton (25.59). The highlight of the club’s calendar over the Christmas period was the annual Beer Run, with the emphasis more on the beer than the running. A strong club turnout sampled the delights of eight of Tamworth’s best known establishments and a good time was had by all, although no personal bests were recorded![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1007″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

The Club is expecting to run a new Couch to 5k starting in March, aimed at new runners. Details will follow soon.
