Further sessions are scheduled for February and March.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]

  • Weekly Round Up – 21st January 2019

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]There was a respectable turnout at Kingsbury water park for Parkrun on Saturday although the distractions of the National Running Show at the NEC were too much for some.

Sunday brought the third round of the Derby Runner Cross Country League, the venue this time being Allestree Park in Derby. This proved to be a very muddy and hilly six mile course, possibly the most difficult course seen so far. Despite the harsh conditions, Peelers stepped up to the task as enthusiastically as they could. For the men Rob Mace was first home in a very strong 15th place. He was followed by Darren O Leary in 74th, Craig Smith 76th, Matthew Shaw in 77th, Craig Strong 94th, Simon Gordon 104th and George Hope 110th. [vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]After a fairly relaxed Christmas and New Year period, with this time of year offering a break from racing, Peelers were out in force at Kingsbury water park for Parkrun on Saturday.

Lawrence holds the record for the fastest ever Peeler at a parkrun in a slightly more rapid 17.12 minutes. A couple of Peelers were on tour, Allan Williams at Markeaton finishing in 29.24 and Andrew Pickard at Hillsborough in Sheffield in 27.28 mins.

The highlight of the club’s calendar over the Christmas period was the annual Beer Run, with the emphasis more on the beer than the running. A strong club turnout sampled the delights of eight of Tamworth’s best known establishments and a good time was had by all, although no personal bests were recorded![/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”1007″ img_size=”full”][vc_column_text]

The Club is expecting to run a new Couch to 5k starting in March, aimed at new runners. Details will follow soon.

The race began after the 2 minute silence, which was moving and well observed, including the scattering of poppy petals.Conditions proved to be challenging with very soft ground after recent rain and a strong wind, which made it feel cold despite the weather being dry and mild. The 5 mile course was a tough one, featuring plenty of mud, uneven ground and some steep hills.

There was a strong club turnout with 23 participants and some strong individual performances with Emma Pick winning the ladies’ event and Ashley Baldwin second in the mens’ event. As well as those club members running, there was support from other club members with Ray Rodgers providing transport and support, Jo Insley helping with the finish tokens and Karen Grigg and Rachel and James Rickards providing valuable support on the course. 12 year old Byron Crane also acted as a marshall. Victoria Hall was the sole club representative at the Chesterfield half marathon, finishing in a very respectable 1:49 hours.

Like the return of Strictly Come Dancing and X Factor, a further sign that Autumn has arrived was the first Derby Runner Cross Country League race of the season at Anslow near Burton on Trent on Sunday. The weather however was an unseasonably warm 18 degrees and sunny, not the mud and sleet that we have come to expect. The course started with a lap of the meadow and a paddle in the stream followed by two laps with hills and fallen trees to climb over and a couple more visits to the stream in case anyone’s shoes were in danger of drying out!

Peelers were out in force with 28 members representing the club out of a field of over 200 with 9 first timers. Strong performances were in evidence with Ashley Baldwin second in the mens’ race with Lawrence Williamson close behind in sixth, Rob Mace 15th, Lee Rickards 20th, Andrew Pickard 41st, Malcolm Bembridge 51st, Craig Strong 68th, Darren Truman 71st, Trevor Thompson 78th, Craig Smith 79th, Richard Finnegan 98th, Mark Boffey 101st, Simon Gordon 102nd, Stuart Hatton 114th and Ian Grigg 124th.

In the ladies race, Emma Pick was an impressive third followed by Hannah Jenkins in 11th, Donna Lancaster 13th, Judith Matthews 26th, Rachael Casey 29th, Natalie Walker 33rd, Sandra Ingram 35th, Sophie Galloway 43rd, Lisa Crane 62nd, Val Lawson 63rd, Helen Manton 73rd and Caroline Evans 83rd.

It was also good to see club members who weren’t able to run supporting on the day with Lisa Fletcher handling finish tokens, Ray providing transport, Lisa Fletcher and Ben Evans taking photographs and video and others providing valuable support and encouragement around the course. Very appreciated too were Lisa Crane and Josh Trueman who provided much needed cake at the finish!
